A rare character, the few appearances of Windows 3.1 have used a white mech-box similar to that used by 98 and 98SE, piloted by a girl who appears to be DOS/V. Another version becoming more popular is a frail grey-haired young woman in a long frilly violet gown, with a 3.1 brooch on her collar. She is usually accompanied by either a black cat or a small black-haired catgirl in a nurse's outfit, both representing DOS.

3.1-tan (大婆様, Oobaba-sama) is an OS-tan representing the Windows 3.x series.

History

Obaba's history is not clearly documented across any source, but one plausible and the most likely origin of her design is a drawing by eg33 first uploaded to Danbooru in 2006, though the design has been seen in various OS-tan related communities since early 2004. This warrants a conclusion that her design originated between late 2003 and early 2004. Obaba's design since then, however, has widely varied in its coloring, proportions, outfit, and other traits in works depicting her. Obaba possesses great popularity to this day in the Eastern OS-tan community, more popular than XP-tan or ME-tan by artistic output[1] while remaining somewhat niche within the West, though with a varyingly consistent output of artwork on both sides of the fandom. She holds the most posts out of any OS-tan on Pixiv, and the fourth most posts of any OS-tan on Danbooru, ahead of 95-tan and behind 2K-tan, ME-tan and XP-tan.

Appearance

Obaba appears as a loribaba with either purple or gray hair, wearing a dress that widely varies in specific composition across different artists, but possesses a general purple color scheme and employs traits typical of Gothic Lolita fashion. Among her consistent traits are red eyes, a large bow located either on the front or back of her hair, and a smaller bow atop her chest bearing a metal "3.1" badge. Contemporary works most often involve more purple given to her design, while contemporaneous works from OS-tans' origin are more accurate to the colored eg33 work's composition.

Personality

Obaba can be argued to have one of the least consistent personalities of any OS-tan (not to be said as a negative trait), but her presentation on Futaba, specifically noted on its section of the Nijiura wiki, is that of a soft-spoken older woman in a far younger body. [2] This depiction as noted before does not appear very consistently across many works, likely owing to the Nijiura Wiki's crowdsourced nature; as such, despite its somewhat contemporaneous nature, it cannot be taken solely as an accurate descriptor of her personality.
